Rapid Response Satellite System Japan

Spacedat's Rapid Response Satellite System sent its first alert a few minutes after 5:46:23 AM UTC (about 15:15h local time) when an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred in the unpopulated region of Tohoku in Japan.

The system started gathering information from different sources like Satellite Images, the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS), European Commission Joint Research Centre (EC/JRC), NOAA Center for Tsunami Research, Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, USGS Earthquake Hazard Program.

The following was the report:
The earthquake happened 128km from Sendai. The closest civilian airport is Sendai (128km).
A Red Tsunami warning was generated. The maximum tsunami wave height near the coast of Kamaishi will be 8.6m.

Potentially affected critical infrastructure:
  • Nuclear plants: FUKUSHIMA-DAIICHI (154km), FUKUSHIMA-DAINI (161km), ONAGAWA (76km)
  • Hydrodams: [None]
  • Airports: Sendai (128km), Kasuminome (125km), Matsushima (100km), Junmachi (174km), Ojojibara (133km), Hanamaki (163km)
  • Ports: Soma (134km), Shiogama (116km), Ishinomaki (91km), Onagawa (80km), Kesennuma Ko (90km), Ofunato (99km), Kamaishi (113km), Yamada (132km), Miyako (150km), Fudai (190km)
Based on an automated impact model, this earthquake, which occurred in a region with low vulnerability to natural disasters, has potentially a high humanitarian impact.

Considering the magnitude of the event a tsunami warning was issued by many countries along the Pacific Ocean. The arrival time issued for the country of Peru was estimated by the Marina de Guerra del Peru -  Dirección de Hidrografía y Navegación based on the information from the PTWC (both live feeds could be seen in this blog) were the following:

Talara  - N - 19:45 - 11 Mar
Paita - N - 19:48 - 11 Mar
Eten - N - 20:45 - 11 Mar
Malabrigo - N-  20:50 - 11 Mar
Chimbote - C-  20:52 - 11 Mar
Callao - C-  20:56 - 11 Mar
Pisco - C - 20:58 - 11 Mar
San Juan - C - 21:00 - 11 Mar
Matarani - S - 21:33 - 11 Mar
Ilo - S - 21:43 - 11 Mar

The estimated wave height was between 1 and 1.5 metres

Spacedat's System provided us with updated information obtained from the NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) in order to monitor the water column height in different points along the Pacific Ocean. It was after that we were able to measure the wave height over Hawaii (51407 NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC)) and later near the Galapagos Island (32411 NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) that were able to predict that the Tsunami would not seriously affect the Peruvian Coast.
